Devadatta's fate

Devadatta was one of the Sakyan princes who entered the Order of monks but was unable to attain any stage of sainthood. Instead, he mastered psychic power and became concerned with worldly things. He wanted to rule the Sangha instead of the Buddha. He also made several attempts to kill the Buddha. Before his death he regretted his actions, and wanted to see the Buddha. However, on his way to see him he was engulfed by the earth and perished before seeing the Buddha.
