The First Sermon
Having attained Awakening, the Buddha went in search of the five ascetics,
his former companions in the forest, to tell them of what he discovered.
This first sermon was called the Dhamma-cakka-pavattana Sutta “Turning
of the Wheel of The Law”. In it are contained the basic doctrines of
The Buddha’s teaching. Kondanya, on hearing this sermon attained the
wisdom of Dhamma. All five became the first followers of the Buddha. This
marks the beginning of the Sangha.
