The Bodhi Tree

During the full moon night before his Awakening, Gotama the Ascetic made the resolve not to rise again until enlightenment had been attained, even if his skin, bones and flesh should crumble away.
Gotama remained concentrated in meditation under the Bodhi tree. The demon Mara, ignorance and illusion personified, dispatched first his daughters to tempt Gotama and then his horrible armies to invoke fear in the ascetic.
